Polson 2, Corvallis 1

I'm still trying to put together my thoughts about this game. Polson is in the FINAL FOUR for soccer in Montana. The win today showed why they've been able to be so strong this season. It takes an incredibly tough team to defeat Corvallis and under the conditions that they did it.

Senior Trever Moll scored in the 15th minute, then Corvallis tied it up in the 59th. What followed was a tense 15 minutes that caused me to look for the TUMS bottle. Sophomore Jon Huetmaker scored in the 76th minute to give Polson a dramatic victory in the first round of the playoffs.

Some thoughts...

1. Polson has won seven straight.
2. This is head coach Jess Kittle's first playoff win.
3. Polson was actually in the South conference with Corvallis when they began the program, so Kittle and Corvallis head coach Brock Hammill are actually good friends. Hammill told Kittle with the time ticking down and both teams locked in a 1-1 tie "it's gonna come down right down to the wire" and it did.
4. Polson controlled the tempo for much of the first half, while Corvallis came out in the second with a bit of a fire under them. Amazing game to watch if you're a fan of soccer.
5. Polson will play Belgrade next weekend after they beat Stevensville 1-0 today. The South has zero teams left in the playoffs.
6. Does anyone else think the Pirate mascot is hilarious?

Cross Country Roundup

With the Arlee Hatchery Run and the Pirates Duel last week, there was a lot of running going on. I want to apologize to all the runners out there for putting the roundup on web only but I figured that getting a few more running photos in the paper was more important than a heavily abbreviated cross country roundup. Instead here is the full roundup in all it's wonderful glory (I'll post all the results for all the runners tonight when I get back from the Charlo-Arlee volleyball game)

Just for fun... Sounders FC vs. Polson Pirates

The Seattle Sounders FC are by far my favorite team and its been that way since their inception last season. Having been to a few games, I can tell you that it's an absolutely amazing experience. You know what is also amazing? The Polson boys soccer team's run to the playoffs with an undefeated conference record. So as a treat, I thought I would compare both of the teams.

Fans
Seattle Sounders - 32,000+ every game, the most in the MLS. Some people have said that a Sounders game matches up in terms of enviroment with many top European teams as well. Lets not forget the March to the March where thousands of fans walk to the game from downtown Seattle.

Polson Pirates - While they don't have quite the seating capacity of Qwest Field, there is plenty of people making lots of noise in the stands. Parents with cowbells are a force to be reckoned with.

Advantage - Polson, I mean would you mess with a parent with a cowbell? I think not.

Stadium
Seattle Sounders - Qwest Field, also home to the Seattle Seahawks, it has been called the loudest stadium in the NFL and is also one of the most modern. It works well for the Sounders as they tarp off the upper part of the stadium.

Polson Pirates - The Polson Sports complex with has a beautiful view of Flathead Lake.

Advantage - Seattle, simply because Polson doesn't have that funny old guy that dressed in a suit and yells "PEAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNUUUUUUUTTTTTTS" like they do in Seattle. Cracks me up everytime.

Uniforms
Seattle Sounders - They have some pretty sick kits, well at least two sick kits. There are the rave green ones which they always wear. There are the blue ones which they never wear for some reason and then they have these terrible highlighter yellow ones that they should probably burn.

Polson Pirates - Their home uniforms are classic white and purple numbering. Their away jerseys are purple and gold.

Advantage - Polson. Those yellow ones are terrible for the Sounders.

Goalie

Seattle Sounders - Kasey Keller Could be the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the US. Grew up in Seattle, played college in Portland and has had a storied career. Chose to come back to Seattle to play for the home crowd.

Polson Pirates - Clay Frissell. Three goals have been given up in conference this season. Three. You're more likely to get struck by lightening while being attacked by Sasquatch and the Easter Bunny than scoring a goal on Polson.

Advantage - Frissell, the guy is going to be an Eagle Scout. You don't mess with that.

Concession Stand

Seattle Sounders - Three dollars for a Jones Soda. Damn!

Polson Pirates - Three hot dogs, a bag of popcorn, a powerade, a caramel apple sucker and a Twix bar. All for five bucks.

Advantage - Polson, why do you think I've gained 20 pounds since moving to Polson?

So there you have it, and don't forget to come on down to the Polson Sports complex this Saturday at 3 p.m. for their first round playoff game against Corvallis.
