Sept. 2 Football roundup

Polson 40, Belgrade 0
Last year, the Pirates knocked off the defending state champions in their opening game of the season. This year, they dismantled a very good playoff team from last year with a 40-0 victory over Belgrade.

Talk about fast starters.

Quarterback sensation Vince DiGiallonardo, who is probably related to Chuck Norris, ran for two touchdowns and threw another as the Pirates won this non-conference matchup. Polson also got promising production from running back Paul McClurg, who scored two touchdowns.

DiGiallonardo touchdown runs came from 15 and 12 yards out from the endzone.

But the real star of this game? The Polson defense. Belgrade was held to just 78 yards offense.

On offense, the Pirates rushed for 287 yards while passing for 56. They will host Hamilton next week at 7 p.m.

Polson 40, Belgrade 0

Ronan 32, Bigfork 12
So where do we start? Ronan's first Class B football game since moving down a classification? Bigfork being the defending state champions? This game had plenty of storylines but Ronan did it's best to quell any drama by jumping out to a 26-6 halftime lead and never letting go.

Marcus Hungerford ran for two touchdowns and caught a 15-yard pass from Robbie Gauthier to help power the Chiefs over the Vikings. Ronan really excelled on defense against a tough Bigfork team, as numerous trips down the field ended short of a score for the Vikings.

Jack Humphreys iced the game for the Chiefs with a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Ronan 32, Bigfork 12
B - 6 - 0 - 6 - 0 - 12

Mission 41, Plains 0

Lincoln 58, Arlee 14
Despite a 117-yard rushing performance by Zach Tameler, the Warriors fell to 0-2 on the season with a 58-14 loss to Lincoln. Tameler rushed for a 68-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Superior 44, Charlo 32
Superior picked up a Western C victory over Charlo in a slugfest that featured three touchdown passes by Vikings' quarterback Tra Ludeman.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 23-6 lead in the second quarter, but Charlo was able to rally and pulled that deficit to within 23-18 at halftime. That's thanks to Ludeman's 75-yard kickoff return and his two touchdown passes to Stephen Delaney and Kolten Andrews.

Superior opened up another big lead in the third quarter but the Vikings battled back with Jacen Peterson catching a 50-yard pass from Ludeman and Delaney throwing a 40-yard pass to Ludeman in the fourth..

Charlo moved to 1-1 on the season.

Polson Boys' Soccer ties against Hamilton

Polson has historically started off the fall season slow in boys' soccer, but they are already on the right foot with a 2-2 tie in Hamilton on Tuesday.

It was a tall task for the Pirates too. Hamilton had gone undefeated in the regular season last year before two losses were given to them for using ineligible players.

Trailing 2-1 in the second half after Hamilton's Daymon Halstead scored in the 56th minute, James "The Lawman" Larson scored the chest-to-volley equalizer goal for Polson in the 75th minute.

The Pirates' other goal game off a huge punt by Goalie Clay "The Falcon" Frissell, coupled with pressure by Larson, that forced Hamilton's sweeper to try and head it to the keeper. The ball went through the keeper's hands and into the goal.

Polson now has a 10-day break in between games. They'll host Park on Saturday, Sept. 10.
