Polson Football: Two-wide

Opposing teams have to pick their poison when it comes to the wide-receiving corp for Polson

When Polson first faced Frenchtown in their opening game of the season, senior wide receiver Kyle Bagnell torched them for 12 catches, 205 yards and two touchdowns. When the Pirates faced the Broncs again in the first round of the playoffs, they were prepared. Bagnell caught just two passes for 20 yards.

However, what they hadn't accounted for was senior Lois Mohr. The wide receiver had missed the first game because of a missed physical and apparently snuck under the entire defensive radar. While the Broncs had Bagnell in check, Mohr caught six balls for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

"Having a player like Bagnell can free up any wide receiver," Mohr said.

It wasn't the first time this has happened either. Bagnell has faced double coverage and extra attention all season, and it's understandable as he's racked up 728 yards on 52 catches and five touchdowns.

"It seemed like after a big game I'd get focused in on," Bagnell said.

Mohr was able to take advantage of this in the fourth game of the regular season against Anaconda. Bagnell had two catches for 25 yards, while Mohr has six catches for 139 yards and a touchdown.

"It's definitely good to get him going," Bagnell said. "I feel fine about it as long as we move the ball. I'd rather have them dig down on me."

At 6'3" and 190 pounds, it's easy to see why Polson head coach Scott Wilson likes to get Mohr the ball. He can also come up big in the clutch as Mohr caught a touchdown pass in the first overtime of the Pirates 27-21 victory over Frenchtown in the first round of the playoffs.

"I felt calm and I felt like I got the job done," Mohr said. "It was a seven-yard slant and I caught the defender inside."

Polson would score in the second overtime and have their extra-point block, meaning that the Pirates had to make a thrilling defensive stand for the win.

"We've been under pressure all year," Mohr, who's team has been in five games decided by less than two touchdowns, said. "As a team, it brings us together."

It was that team play and kids sticking to their assignments that won the game.

"I've never been in an overtime game before in my life," Bagnell said. "It was crazy."

Leading the troops has been junior quarterback Vince DiGiallonardo, who has killed teams with both his legs and his arm. He led the team with 678 rushing yards and 10 touchdown while throwing for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns.

"It definitely opens things up for us because the linebackers have to stay home," Bagnell, who worked out with DiGiallonardo all summer to develop an ESP-like sense of where each other is out on the field, said. "We're pretty much in sync. He knows what I'm going to do."

Mohr understands what a weapon DiGiallonardo is when he decides to run and knows exactly what to do when his quarterback takes off.

"Go find someone to hit and block," he said.

Wilson praised his team for carrying out all their assignments last week and there's no doubt he has a game plan for 8-1 Butte Central this week.

"We're confident," Bagnell said. "We match up with these guys well."

Polson will need to execute well against the athleticism of Butte Central, but if any previous games have been an indicator, they'll do just fine.

"I just want to come out and play," Mohr said.

The donut mile...

The Doughnut Mile might be the most harrowing run in the history of Cross Country. Eat a doughnut, run a lap on the track then eat another doughnut. Four laps, four donuts and a lot of pain. The Polson Cross Country team did the Doughnut run to end their season yesterday after strong performances at state. Here are some photos from the run...

MV Mariners' Bagnell and Rausch named to all-state team

Legion baseball All-State honors were handed out today and there were two familiar faces were on the list. Pitcher Kyle Bagnell and catcher Tim Rausch were named to the team. They were also named to the Western A All-Conference teams as well.

That should come to no surprise to those who watched Bagnell confused the heck out of opposing batters for the Mariners and Rausch showcase general excellent whether he was batting or catching at the plate.

Bagnell had two no-hitters during the season and had a game with 20 strikeouts. Rausch led the Mariners offensively.

Is this what the Heat need to do to win?

Remember when the Nets were considered possible suitors for King James?

Well that bridge has officially been burned.

The Heat defeated the Nets 101-78 tonight and what was most surprising was nobody from the Big 3 had a huge night. James had 20 points, Wade had 17 and Bosh had 18. This begs to question... is this what Miami needs to do to win?

Yesterday in Lake County Sports... Oct. 31

Wow. Yesterday was absolutely ridiculous as Lake County teams made a huge splash in the postseason in many sports. Let's take a look...

Football

Class A

Polson 27, Frenchtown 21 (2OT)
An absolute thriller. Polson wins on a defensive stand after their previous touchdown had it's extra point blocked. Vinny G (Vince DiGiallonardo) had an incredible game through the air, as the Pirates defeated the defending state champions, again. They also beat the Broncs in their first game of the season.

Class C

Charlo 59, White Sulphur Springs 50
Charlo had a first quarter from hell. The offense wasn't working. White Sulphur Springs was slicing and dicing the defense, and as senior defensive lineman Chance Rosenbaum said, they found out the Hornets weren't a slouch team. Down 20-0, the Vikings also received the scare of a lifetime when Chico Stipe limped off to the sidelines. The senior quarterback said his knee was hurting him and if he based him back solely on the amount of pain he wouldn't have gone back in but he knew his teammates needed him.

After the first quarter, Charlo had the momentum and battled back into the game and took a commanding lead in the third quarter. WSS outscored the Vikings in the fourth quarter but Charlo hung on for the win.

Twin Bridges 49, Arlee 6
Twin Bridges had a good day both rushing and passing the ball. They scored 22 points in the first quarter en route to the victory. The Warriors should still be proud of the season they had, making it to the playoffs the past two seasons and being a powerful, hard-nosed football team every time they step out on the field. Twin Bridges was the No. 1 seed from the South, and should do well in the rest of the playoffs.

Volleyball

Charlo wins 10-C District Tournament
Charlo and Arlee were both impressive in the tournament, slicing through all the other teams. It came down to both these two teams in both the undefeated game on Saturday morning and the championship match in the afternoon. The Lady Vikings had Arlee's number both times, winning 3-0 both times.

Mission wins 7B District  Tournament
Despite being the third seed, the Lady Bulldogs were the best team in the tournament, by far. They beat No. 2 seed Bigfork, a huge rival in the regular season and No. 1 seed Eureka twice to take the district crown. Bigfork and Eureka both had wins over Mission in the regular season but the Lady Bulldogs came into the tournament focused. Lady Bulldogs head coach Kendal Anderson said she wanted to play Bigfork and that's exactly what happened in the second round.
