Legion State Championship - Laurel 8, Mission Valley 1

Laurel won their third straight state championship with an 8-1 win over the Mission Valley Mariners on Monday in Polson.

Laurel collected 12 hits overall while starting pitcher Cole Dooper pitching a complete game and struck out five. The Mariners did get 9 hits but Dooper was able to scatter them to minimize the damage.

Laurel opened up a 3-0 lead and then scored four in the top of the sixth thanks to a Ryan Caron 2-RBI double, then a wild pitch that allowed Caron to score and then Justin Linse singled to drive in a run as well.

Mission Valley scored it's lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Austin Von Tom made contact with the ball and Laurel committed a fielding error which gave Robbie Gauthier enough time to score from second base.

Dalton Molzhon finished the game 2-for-3 for the Mariners.

Laurel got a bunch of production from Caron, who finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and 4 RBIs. Kyler Worden was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Legion State Game 14 - Mission Valley 12, Great Falls 0

Jake Young went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as the Mission Valley Mariners thumped Great Falls 12-0 to advance to the state championship game on Monday.

With Justin Evertz pitching on two days rest, the Mariners blanked the Electrics while jumping out to an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first. Kevin Hagedorn, Jack Humphreys and Young all had singles to drive in a run in that rally.

In the top of the third, Young doubled to bring in two runs and in the top of the fifth, Dalton Molzhon singled to bring home Hagedorn. The Mariners would ad to their lead in the top of the seventh, when Molzhon singled again to plate a run. Humphreys bunted to bring in a run also, and Chris Clary drove in a run in the inning as well.

For the Electrics, Justin Pfennigs went 2-for-4.

Legion State Game 13: Great Falls 15, Laurel 14

Great Falls had home runs from Scott Held and Jayse McLean and powered their way to a 15-14 lead over Laurel in the Class A State Tournament.

The Electrics scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding 13-5 lead, but Laurel scored six in the top of the ninth and almost rallied back for the win.

David Swecker hit a three-run homer (his fourth home run of the tournament) in the top of the ninth and Cody King doubled to score three more runs but the comeback sputtered after that for Laurel.

For Great Falls, Held finished the game 3-for-5 with a HR, double and five RBIs. McLean was 4-for-4 with a HR and 2 RBIs. They also got seven innings from starting pitcher Dalton Cook, who struck out seven.

The game means that Great Falls will play Mission Valley tomorrow at noon, and the winner of that game will play Laurel in the championship game at 4 p.m.

Legion State Game 12: Mission Valley 11, Libby 3

Mission Valley knocked off the Western District Champion Libby Loggers 11-3 behind a stellar pitching performance by Josh Rustad, who was running on just two days rest.

Rustad went the complete game and struck out 13, holding the hard-hitting Loggers to just six hits.

The Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Libby scored three in the top of the sixth and looked to be coming back. Mission Valley answered in the bottom of the frame, however, with Kevin Hagedorn hitting a two-run homer. Hagedorn added to the lead again in the bottom of the seventh with a single that plated two runs and made it 8-3.

Hagedorn finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs.

In the bottom of the eighth, Mission Valley got an RBI by Robbie Gauthier and a double by Austin Von Tom that scored two to make it 11-3. The Mariners had seven doubles in the game against Libby.

Micha Germany went 1-for-4 for the Loggers with a double and an RBI.

Mission Valley will play the winner of the Laurel-Great Falls game tomorrow at noon.
