Legion State Game 11: Laurel 6, Mission Valley 2


Mission Valley jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the top of second, but Laurel showed why they are the defending Class A State Champions and came away with the 6-2 victory in the undefeated game.

Laurel got on the board first when Zach Cortese drove in a run in the bottom of the first, but Mission Valley answered back in the top of the second with Cole McArthur scoring on a wild pitch and Dalton Molzhon driving in a run.

Laurel took the lead for good in the bottom of the third as Cortese drove in a run with a single tie things up and then Jay Dempster doubled to score a run and give Laurel the 3-2 lead.

That's how things would stay until the bottom of the eighth when David Swecker led off with a home run, then two batters later Ryan Caron singled to plate a run. Jordan Henke also scored in the inning off a Mission Valley error.

Swecker came in to relieve Jay Dempster in the top of the eighth (Dempster went 7 1/3 innings with six strikeouts), and was able to close the game out.

Austin Von Tom pitched seven innings for the Mariners and scattered 11 of their hits while striking out three. Derek Rathe pitched one inning of relief.

Legion State Game 10: Libby 13, Belgrade 7



The Western District hasn't been kind to the Belgrade Bandits. After the Bandits lost to the Mission Valley Mariners last night (from the Western District), they fell today 13-7 to the Libby Loggers in a loser-out contest.

Chris Herbig went the distance for the Loggers, striking out five, while Belgrade had to use five different pitchers.

Libby jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third, but Belgrade would answer back with four of their own in the bottom of the frame thanks to a double by Brett Franklin with the bases loaded scored three runs. Conner Switzer also bunted to bring in a run.

The Loggers weren't having any of it, however, and in the top of the fourth they scored eight runs off six hits and one Belgrade error. Jared Winslow got the game going with a double to score a run and then six runs later, Winslow made it back up to the plate where he singled to drive in another score. He dinished the game 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

In the bottom of the fifth, Franklin hit a solo home run but the Bandits' bats would go quiet after that until the bottom of the ninth.

They sparked a mini-rally, as a Libby error allowed Alex Hess to score and then a batter later, a passed ball opened home for Chris Mitchell, but that's where it would end for the Bandits.

The loss knocks the Bandits out of the Class A State Tournament.

Legion State Game 9: Great Falls 29, Fort MacLeod 2

Great Falls collected 22 hits in a 29-2 drubbing of Fort MacLeod to stay alive in the Class A State Legion Baseball Tournament on Saturday. Lead-off hitter Anthony Bonilla went 5-for-6 with a triple and drove in three runs.

But obviously he wasn't the only one that was productive at the plate. Scott Held, Justin Pfennigs, Sam Wingerter and Joshua Kakalecik all drove in four runs. Dalton Cook plated five runs for the Electrics in the game.

Fort MacLeod took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Great Falls scored four in the bottom of the frame for the 4-1 advantage and they just built on it from there. They scored six in the fourth, and then exploded for a 10-run inning in the fifth with eight hits, keyed by Sam Wingerter's three-run homer.

Fort MacLeod committed six errors and went through four pitchers. Hayden Shackel drove in a run off a single for the Royals. The loss knocks the Royals out of the state tournament.

Legion State Game 8: Mission Valley 15, Belgrade 0



Justin Evertz pitched a no-hitter as the Mariners defeated another No. 1 seed in the Class A Legion Baseball state tournament. Belgrade committed four errors and gave up 20 hits while falling 15-0 to the Mariners.

Mission Valley opened up a 5-0 lead through five inning and then really opened things up when Jake Young hit a grand slam home run in the top of the sixth. In the top of the eighth, Mission Valley scored six runs off of two hits and two errors committed by the Bandits.

Seven different Mariners had multi-hit games and Evertz helped himself out on offense by going 3-for-6 with two RBIs. On the mound, he struck out eight and walked five.

Ft. MacLeod had another great pitching performance as Taylor Wolstenholme went nine innings and struck out 11. However, Laurel collected 12 hits, including four for extra bases and won 7-4 in a close matchup.

Laurel jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the early stages but Ft. MacLeod scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Hayden Shackel, Jake Hansen and Luc Lavorato all drove home runs in that inning.

Justin Linse went 2-for-5 with three RBI during the game for Laurel, and in the top of the seventh with the Dodgers leading 5-4, David Swecker hit a solo home run. Laurel added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Cole Dooper plated Zach Cortese.

Swecker closed out the final three innings for Laurel on the mound, striking out five.

Whats the best cure for the flu? Winning a state tournament baseball game.

The Great Falls Electrics have been fighting the flu since they've been in Polson at the state tourney, losing to the Mission Valley Mariners 16-6 last night, but they came up big in extra-innings against the Billings Cardinals today.

Derik Powell hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth to give the Electrics the 9-8 victory. Powell finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBIs (But obviously the most important RBI).

Great Falls collected 15 hits as a team in the contest, and Sam Wingerter went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two doubles. Justin Pfennigs had three doubles as well.

At first it looked like the Electrics' fans might be sick as the Billings Cardinals jumped out to a 3-1 lead through three innings. Great Falls added two more in the bottom of the fourth to tie things up but Billings would answer back in the top of the sixth to make it 5-3. They extended that lead to 8-4 by the top of the eighth.

Billings collected 10 hits but committed five errors in the matchup. Tray Roadifer went 2-4 with a double and an RBI and Kenny Clarin went 2-for-4 also, with two RBIs.

Roadifer also picked 8 and 1/3 innings and struck out nine for the Cardinals.

In the bottom of the eighth, Great Falls scored two runs when Anthony Bonilla singled to bring home Sam Wingerter and a batter later, Dalton Cook doubled to score another.

Cook pitched the top of the ninth and 10th in relief, not allowing a run and striking out three.

In the bottom of the ninth, Powell singled to score a run, then Tanner Lee singled to bring in a run to force extra innings.

Game 5 - Libby 14, Dillon 3


After having 19 of their batters strike out yesterday, Libby got all that pent up offense out of their system with a 14-3 victory over the Dillon Cubs in a game shortened due to the 10-run rule. Dillon has been knocked out of the the tournament with two loses.

Alex Bluhm hit a grand slam in the top of the second to blow the game wide open for the Loggers.

Dillon put in MJ Simkins, who pitched admirably in relief and kept the Loggers in check. The Cubs tried to chip away with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings but couldn't overcome the looming deficit.

Libby's Jared Winslow started the game and struck out three in just two innings, and then with the game looking like it was in hand, Bluhm was put in to pitch and he finished things out.

Dillon actually outhit the Loggers 9-7, but really hurt themselves with seven errors. Cubs' leadoff hitter Dilan Starkel was 2-for-3 with a double.

Libby will play the loser of the Belgrade-Mission Valley game, at 2 p.m. tomorrow.

Legion State Game 4 - Mission Valley 16, Great Falls 6


Mission Valley used an eight-run top of the sixth inning to upset the No. 1 seed for the North District in the first round of the Class A Legion State Tournament.

Robbie Gauthier went 2-for-3 for the Mariners, driving in three runs and hitting a double. Derrick Rathe was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double as well.

It was a back and fourth affair between both teams, with the game being tied 6-6 before Mission Valley found the magic stroke. The Mariners collected five hits, Great Falls committed two errors and it broke the game wide open with a 14-6 M's lead.

Josh Rustad pitched a four-hitter for the Mariners, although errors by the defense did cause a little anxiety by their home crowd, the veteran pitcher was cool under pressure and struck out seven.

Great Falls' Dalton Cook, Justin Pfennigs and Sam Wingerter drove in runs for the Electrics.

The Mariners had 14 hits as a team and five different players had a multi-hit game.

Legion State Game 3 - Laurel 5, Dillon 4

The defending state champion Laurel Dodgers got a scare for the Dillon Cubs but came away with a 5-4 victory in the first round of the Class A State Tournament.

Dillon scores two runs in the bottom of the first when Robert Walsh drew a walk to bring home Donnie Moore and Dillon Womack hit a sac fly to bring Andy Peterson home. In the top of the second, David Swecker hit a solo-home run to cut Dillon's lead to 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, Laurel took the lead as another bases loaded walk drawn by Bud Mehring brough home a run and then a wild pitch allowed Cole Dooper to score. The Dodgers would add to their lead in the top of the sixth when Nilles Kenny hit an RBI single and Justin Linse scored on an error.

Dillon posted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth as a Laurel error allowed Dilan Starkel to score and Robert Walsh drove in another run.

However, the Dodgers would shut the door with three-up, three-down in the bottom of the ninth for the victory.

Legion State Game 2 - Belgrade 8, Billings 2


Belgrade got nine strike outs from LD Severson as they downed the Billings Cardinals 8-2 in the opening rounds of the Class A Tournament on Thursday.

They also struck first on the scoreboard, getting a bunt RBI by Alex Hess and later in the evening, a double seed allowed Mark Erickson to score.

Meanwhile Severson went eight innings and held the Cardinals in check, scattering nine of their hits. While at the plate batting, Severson hit a single to plate two more runs and give Belgrade the 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Belgrade scored four runs, thanks to RBIs by Chris Mitchell and Chris Gilbreaith. Two errors led to two more Bandits' scores and they had the 8-0 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Billings staged a rally as Colter Endy drove in a run and Tony Huppert plated another but it fell short and Belgrade came away with the victory.

Fielding was a big factor in this game with Billings committing four errors and Belgrade committing zero.

The Western District champion Libby Loggers were upended by a 19-strikeout performance by Fort Macleod Royals' pitcher Jake Hansen.

Libby would score one run in the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles by Alex Bluhm and Justyn Mack, and back-to-back errors by the Royals that allowed Alex Bluhm to score. The Loggers had four hits in the game.

An error in the first inning allowed Fort Macleod to get on the board first, as Maverick Price scored for the Royals after an outfielder dropped the ball in the outfield. In the bottom of the third, Jake Hansen doubled to scored a run and then later in the inning, Tyler Ammann singled to plate another.

The Royals' Taylor Wolstenholme homered to lead off the bottom of the fifth for the 4-1 lead, and then Fort Macleod would score two more runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a sac fly by Price and Wolstenholme would score latter in the inning thanks to an error.

Libby didn't help themselves with three errors.

How they got here... Montana Class A Legion Baseball State Tournament

Here's a rundown on how each team did in their respective district tournament championship games in order to get to Polson for the state tournament. Keep in mind that both teams from these championship games made it, with the exception of the Missoula Mavericks since the Mission Valley Mariners got the automatic bid since they're the host team.

Play starts tomorrow at 9 a.m. at O'Malley Park.

Mariners vs. Mavs Western District Tournament photos

Mission Valley lost 4-3 today to the Missoula Mavericks at the Western District Tournament in Libby, but will get a chance for glory next week at the Class A State Tournament in Polson. The host team gets an automatic berth in the state tournament.
