Last night's football scores

Here's the football action from last night...

Arlee 48, Seeley-Swan 7
Ronan 28, Columbia Falls 20
Libby 17, Polson 16

Arlee 48, Seeley-Swan 7

Arlee punched their ticket into the playoffs with a 48-7 win over Seeley-Swan last night and fittingly, the seniors excelled on senior night. They'll get the No. 4 seed from the Western C Conference and face the top seed from the Southern C Conference.

"I knew they wanted this game," Arlee head coach Scott Palmer said.

Arlee put up 22 points in the first and 18 in the second to get the 35-point clock rolling. The offense was largely keyed by the hard running of senior Cole Rice, who ran 14 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

"We play hard-nosed football like we do week in and week out," Palmer said.

The passing offense was also working for the Warriors, as senior quarterback Dylan Moran returned from an ankle injury to score the first touchdown of the game with a 32-yard pass to senior Dakota Desjarlias. Moran also had 56 yards on the ground.

While the Warriors have been banged up injury-wise this season, Palmer said that this win gives them momentum heading into the playoffs and hopes his players can rest up.

"We're trying to get healed but we have a healthy core," Palmer said.

Arlee finishes the regular season at 4-3.

A look at the Belgrade boy's soccer team...

Four years ago, 10 freshmen tried out for the Belgrade high school soccer team.

Nine of those kids have grown to become senior leaders of the Panthers that are just a win away from the Montana state championship game.

"We've had more wins than we've ever had before as a program," head coach Ric Plante said.

The team was just a tie away from the Eastern A conference, but was able overcome an 0-3 postseason record in the pass to defeat Stevensville last weekend 1-0 at home. At 8-4-1, they stand in the way of the Polson Pirates and state championship glory.

Earlier this season, the Pirates traveled to play Belgrade, losing 1-0, but the team was going through offensive woes that they've since remedied.

"It was a good match," Plante said. "The match could have good either way. I think we're pretty equal teams on the field."

Plante went on to say that the playoffs offer a different level of energy.

"I think you can throw out that first game," Plante said. "You can't duplicate that pressure of prepare for it."

The Pirates are no strangers to pressure, tied with Corvallis 1-1 in their first round game at home and then pulling it out with a clutch goal with five minutes to go in the game. At 9-3-1, Polson has used a smothering defense all year anchored by junior Clay Frissell. A midfield/forwards combination from seniors Sean Hart and Trever Moll has been downright scary, but it still remains a somewhat young team.

Belgrade on the other hand, has plenty of experience.

"It's four years in the making," Plante said. "These kids have worked extremely hard."

Polson will host Belgrade on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Charlo takes out defending state champions

I'm not one to brag (yes I am) and I don't want to make this any bigger deal than it is (it's a big freakin' deal) but the Charlo Vikings took out the defending state champions last night, Drummond.

The 38-14 victory is even more impressive, considering Drummond has won five of the last seven state championships and they walloped Charlo last season.

Senior quarterback Chico Stipe was incredible again, rushing for 212 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings also unleashed their air attack against the Trojans, with senior Austin Bauer catching two 35-yard touchdown passes.

Charlo never trailed against Drummond, jumping out to a 14-6 lead in the first half and then piling it on the second half for 24 more points and the victory.

Bigfork 42, Mission 21

Bigfork showed why they were undefeated in the District 7-B, but Mission showed why they went from a team that was picked last in the conference to a 5-3 record. The Bulldogs played one tough half of football and only trailed the Vikings 21-13 at halftime before losing 42-21 last Thursday night in St. Ignatius.

"We played hard against these guys. They were big," Mission head coach Peter Hamilton said.

The Bulldogs rushed for 332 yards in the game, including a 172-yard performance from senior running back Lane Wheeler. Junior Austin Durglo, who had just recently switched from tight end to running back, had 105 yards on 19 carriers. Junior Scotty Gilleard had 53 yards. All had a touchdown rushing.

Despite their command on the ground, penalties hampered drives and plagued the Bulldogs all night.

"We kept slipping all over the place," Hamilton said.

The loss puts the Bulldogs in a position that if Troy loses tonight against Thompson Falls then they're in the playoffs. If Troy wins, their season will end with a strong showing of improvement. Numerous coaches in the league commented on the hard-nosed running game the Bulldogs bring to every game and just how punishing they are.

"People don't like to play against us," Hamilton said.

Asked if he would be watching the Troy game, Hamilton gave a resounding "no."

"I don't even want to think about it," Hamilton said. "I haven't slept in two days."

Charlo defeats Lincoln 3-0

Charlo won it's 14th game of the season tonight against Lincoln, 3-0, and didn't trail the entire night with scores of 25-12, 25-20, 25-9.

"I think they're starting to gel," Charlo head coach Sheryl Kain said.

Other than 0-0, Charlo was tied just once, 12-12, in the second game, prompting Kain to call a time out.

"I told them them that they need to be ready for the short [attacks]," Kain said.

She went on to say that it was very promising to see her team work and adjust around Lincoln's short attack and blocking at the net.

"We started to figure it out," Kain said. "They talked to each other a lot between plays."

With districts looming next Friday in Charlo, Kain said she liked how the team is performing. The Charlo gymnasium was full of pink shirts, including the team as this week Kain organized "Think Pink." There was a bake sale and raffle to help raise money for the St. Luke Foundation for mammogram screening to help low-income individuals.

"The response was awesome," Kain said. "Everybody was very generous and the community members were really into it."

The Lady Vikings also enjoyed the two games in their pink jerseys.

"The girls wanted to wear them to districts," Kain said.

Here are some photos I took from the game...

Northwestern A football statistics

More stats to dig through for the Northwestern A conference. Shall we take a look?

Team Rushing Offense
1. Col. Falls (258 attempts, 1604 yards, 6.22 yards per rush, 229.14 yards per game, 14 touchdowns)
2. Ronan (345, 1650, 4.78, 206.25, 16)
3. Polson (245, 1386, 5.66, 198.00, 18)
3. Libby (239, 1342, 5.62, 167.75, 17)
5. Whitefish (139, 689, 4.96, 86.13, 7)

Ronan may have had a rough last Friday against Polson but I still stand by the fact that they have one of the most prolific rushing games in the state. They'll face Columbia Falls this Friday and they'll have to find a way to shut down running back Nate Thompson.

Team Scoring
1. Polson (227 points, 32.43 points per game, 69 opponents points, 9.86 opponents points per game)
2. Col. Falls (193, 27.57, 128, 18.29)
3. Libby (202, 25.25, 183, 22.88)
4. Ronan (182, 22.75, 257, 32.13)

I know Polson lost to Columbia Falls but is there a chance that the Pirates are the best team in the Northwestern A conference? Could it be that they're more balanced than Columbia Falls and the Wildcats caught them on a bad night?

Team passing
1. Whitefish (272 pass attempts, 152 pass completions, 55.88% passing percentage, 1925 yards, 9 touchdowns, 14 interceptions)
2. Polson (120, 67, 55.83%, 1022, 8, 7)
3. Libby (176, 78, 44.32%, 1104, 9, 12)
4. Col. Falls (103, 44, 42.72%, 826, 13, 7)
5. Ronan (99, 53, 53.54%, 741, 8, 8)

Whitefish may have the "best" passing offense but is it as efficient as Polson's? I'll take Vinnie D at quarterback over anyone in the conference.

Bozeman gets Class A boy's basketball tournament

It's been a crazy time so far with all the postseason tournaments getting moved around. The tornado that ripped through Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings has made it's impact far and wide in the world of high school sports. The Wrestling state tournament is going to be split up and spread across the state, and now the Class A boy's basketball tournament will be moving to Bozeman.

The tournament will be on March 3-5 at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman, which is considerably closer to the Mission Valley than Billings. I mapquested it and it would be a 271-mile journey to Bozeman from Polson, which is roughly four hours, as opposed to six and a half hour drive to Billings.

The people in Billings aren't happy about losing another postseason tournament as they had suggested using the Expo Center with a capacity of 4,500 people. The fieldhouse in Bozeman can hold 7,000.

What do you think about the Class A boy's basketball tournament being held in Bozeman?

Last night in Lake County Sports... Oct. 19

Lots of volleyball action going on last night. Lets take a gander...

Class A

Frenchtown defeats Ronan 3-1

The Maidens drop to 5-6 on the season with the loss but are still 4-3 in conference play.

Class B

Mission defeats Thompson Falls 3-1
18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23

She has been fighting sickness but Adessa Durglo had 11 kills against the Lady Bluehawks as Mission won another important conference matchup. That's going to be one crazy district tournament.

Here's also a Monday roundup for Charlo...

Class C

Charlo defeats Alberton 3-0
25-14, 25-12, 25-17

The Lady Vikings improved to 13-1 and seem to be picking up momentum heading into the postseason. Sophomore Rachel Hoyt had eight kills in the match.

This week in Big Sky football

It's going to be another interesting week in the Big Sky Conference as four teams are ranked and have just one loss in the conference. If you were looking for the definition of a quagmire, say hello to the BSC. I'll try and break down the matchups this week and make sense of everything...

Sacramento State (2-2 conf., 3-3 overall) @ No. 8 Eastern Washington (4-1 conf., 5-2 overall)
The Eagles will be their red turf, but they'll also have to contend with a Sac State team that isn't a pushover. Eastern can't overlook this Sac State team as they gave Montana a run for their money when these two teams played.

No. 22 Northern Arizona (2-1 conf., 4-2 overall) @ No. 7 Montana (4-1 conf., 5-2 overall)
NAU walloped MSU last week but they have to play the Grizzlies in their home stadium. This isn't an easy task by any stretch of the imagination although I don't think Montana is as strong this year as they've been in previous season. UM has won the previous 12 meetings though.

Northern Colorado (1-4 conf., 2-5 overall) @ No. 15 Montana State (3-1 conf., 5-2 overall)
This will be the a nice bounce-back for the Bobcats, they should be able to handle the Bears, no problem.

Portland State (1-2 conf., 2-4 overall) @ Weber State (2-2 conf., 3-3 overall)
Weber State has won three straight against Portland State, but the Vikings gave Montana a scare last week. This game shows you how crazy this conference is, it could go either way.

There you have it, feel free to comment below!
