Legion State Game 11: Laurel 6, Mission Valley 2

Mission Valley jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the top of second, but Laurel showed why they are the defending Class A State Champions and came away with the 6-2 victory in the undefeated game.

Laurel got on the board first when Zach Cortese drove in a run in the bottom of the first, but Mission Valley answered back in the top of the second with Cole McArthur scoring on a wild pitch and Dalton Molzhon driving in a run.

Laurel took the lead for good in the bottom of the third as Cortese drove in a run with a single tie things up and then Jay Dempster doubled to score a run and give Laurel the 3-2 lead.

That's how things would stay until the bottom of the eighth when David Swecker led off with a home run, then two batters later Ryan Caron singled to plate a run. Jordan Henke also scored in the inning off a Mission Valley error.

Swecker came in to relieve Jay Dempster in the top of the eighth (Dempster went 7 1/3 innings with six strikeouts), and was able to close the game out.

Austin Von Tom pitched seven innings for the Mariners and scattered 11 of their hits while striking out three. Derek Rathe pitched one inning of relief.
