Sept. 2 Football roundup

Polson 40, Belgrade 0
Last year, the Pirates knocked off the defending state champions in their opening game of the season. This year, they dismantled a very good playoff team from last year with a 40-0 victory over Belgrade.

Talk about fast starters.

Quarterback sensation Vince DiGiallonardo, who is probably related to Chuck Norris, ran for two touchdowns and threw another as the Pirates won this non-conference matchup. Polson also got promising production from running back Paul McClurg, who scored two touchdowns.

DiGiallonardo touchdown runs came from 15 and 12 yards out from the endzone.

But the real star of this game? The Polson defense. Belgrade was held to just 78 yards offense.

On offense, the Pirates rushed for 287 yards while passing for 56. They will host Hamilton next week at 7 p.m.

Polson 40, Belgrade 0

Ronan 32, Bigfork 12
So where do we start? Ronan's first Class B football game since moving down a classification? Bigfork being the defending state champions? This game had plenty of storylines but Ronan did it's best to quell any drama by jumping out to a 26-6 halftime lead and never letting go.

Marcus Hungerford ran for two touchdowns and caught a 15-yard pass from Robbie Gauthier to help power the Chiefs over the Vikings. Ronan really excelled on defense against a tough Bigfork team, as numerous trips down the field ended short of a score for the Vikings.

Jack Humphreys iced the game for the Chiefs with a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Ronan 32, Bigfork 12

Mission 41, Plains 0
The Mission Bulldogs came out strong against Plains last night behind an 85-yard rushing performance by Austin Durglo and an 89-yard rushing performance by Dylan Evans. The Bulldogs had a 34-0 lead by halftime and cruised to the victory.

Mission 41, Plains 0

Lincoln 58, Arlee 14
Despite a 117-yard rushing performance by Zach Tameler, the Warriors fell to 0-2 on the season with a 58-14 loss to Lincoln. Tameler rushed for a 68-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Superior 44, Charlo 32
Superior picked up a Western C victory over Charlo in a slugfest that featured three touchdown passes by Vikings' quarterback Tra Ludeman.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 23-6 lead in the second quarter, but Charlo was able to rally and pulled that deficit to within 23-18 at halftime. That's thanks to Ludeman's 75-yard kickoff return and his two touchdown passes to Stephen Delaney and Kolten Andrews.

Superior opened up another big lead in the third quarter but the Vikings battled back with Jacen Peterson catching a 50-yard pass from Ludeman and Delaney throwing a 40-yard pass to Ludeman in the fourth..

Charlo moved to 1-1 on the season.

Polson Boys' Soccer ties against Hamilton

Polson has historically started off the fall season slow in boys' soccer, but they are already on the right foot with a 2-2 tie in Hamilton on Tuesday.

It was a tall task for the Pirates too. Hamilton had gone undefeated in the regular season last year before two losses were given to them for using ineligible players.

Trailing 2-1 in the second half after Hamilton's Daymon Halstead scored in the 56th minute, James "The Lawman" Larson scored the chest-to-volley equalizer goal for Polson in the 75th minute.

The Pirates' other goal game off a huge punt by Goalie Clay "The Falcon" Frissell, coupled with pressure by Larson, that forced Hamilton's sweeper to try and head it to the keeper. The ball went through the keeper's hands and into the goal.

Polson now has a 10-day break in between games. They'll host Park on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Northwestern A Football Preview by the Daily Inter Lake

Here is an awesome preview by the Daily Inter Lake of football in the Northwestern A this year. Columbia Falls should be the favorite again while Polson is looking to come in second.

Since the conference is incredible competitive, anything can happen but DIL Sports Editor Dave Lesnick does a great job breaking down all the teams and how Frenchtown coming into the conference should make getting a playoff berth even tougher.

The Polson Pirates play their first game on the season on Sept. 2 at Belgrade.

Here's the link to the preview...

Prep football scores for Friday, Aug. 26

Arlee dropped their first game of the season, 51-12, but it was to Superior. Superior just moved from Class B to C, and the score certainly will open up some eyes to other teams around the conference.

Philipsburg also beat Seeley-Swan 82-20 and will play both Arlee and Charlo this year.

This is all via the Missoulian which does an awesome job with all the prep scores. More to come tomorrow.

Ronan Orange and Black Game 2011

Sometimes breaking down an inter-squad scrimmage would be an exercise in over-analyzing things but Ronan fans have to feel pretty good about themselves after tonight.

The first team offense looked zeroed in on offense, committing very few errors and scoring touchdowns on six of their seven possessions against the scout team. Head coach Jim Benn said that the team is still waiting for a few guys to get healthy and that causes havoc on the scout team.

Despite that, one could still be impressed with the Chiefs. With quarterback Robbie Gauthier at the helm, it took only one play from scrimmage for them to score. Gauthier, who's baseball nickname of "Big hit Bob" is going to have to be changed to "Big play Bob," after he connected with wide receiver Marcus Hungerford for an 80-yard touchdown pass.

"I like our scheme that we have now," Hungerford said. "I just like the way we do stuff."

Hungerford also caught a pass for the two-point conversion afterward.

On their next possession, the first team offense handed the ball off to Polson-transfer Jake Skelton, who ripped off an 80-yard touchdown run.

"Our backs ran the ball well," quarterback Robbie Gauthier said. "They ran hard when we needed them too."

Skelton was impressive all night, and so was running back Jack Humphreys, who racked up an impressive yards-per-carry average.

Gauthier would score on the next possession thanks to a one-yard run and after he was done with his part of the scrimmage, he had plenty of kind words to say about the Ronan offensive line.

"We're trying to be a more up-tempo offense and our line did great," Gauthier said.

Humphreys scored next for Ronan on a seven-yard run, and Skelton put the ball in the endzone on the possession after that with a 52-yard catch and run.

Ronan's only blemish was a fumble on their sixth possession of the scrimmage but they were able to erase that thanks to a six-yard Skelton touchdown run.

When the Chiefs put their first-team defense in, the result was equally impressive as the Chiefs forced a fumble on the first play by the scout team. On the next possession they forced a forth down and Robert Fau intercepted the ball. He would come up big on the third possession by the scout team, recovering a fumble forced by the defense.

The first team defense ended things by forcing another forth down before the scrimmage focused on the younger kids.

There's lots of them too, as 57 kids came out for the team this year which is the biggest number that Benn has seen.

"It was surprising to hear we had that many freshman and sophomores come out," Hungerford said.

Benn also said that the senior class was a great group of kids, and they should be the core group that comes up big for the Chiefs this year.

Next Friday, Ronan will play defending Class B state champion Bigfork in their first football game since changing classifications. It's something not lost on the team, coach Benn said that it's a well-coached hard-nosed team and Gauthier said it's a game that will allow the team to see where they are at.

"State champs," Gauthier said. "We are going to try and show them what we got and what we want to do is show everyone that we belong in Class B."

Ronan just missed the playoffs last season in Northwestern A and beat conference champion Columbia Falls in the final game of the season. Moving down to the B classification hasn't changed the focus of the team though, as Hungerford plainly stated about how much the change really matters.

"It's still football," he said.

Bearing the Griz: Preseason pressure

The Montana Grizzlies are exactly where they want to be.

Or don’t you think so?

Let me be probably the first media person ever (because lets be honest, all media
people think they’re right, every time) to admit to you that pre-season polls aren’t exactly the most accurate things in the world.

Not that the media people covering the Big Sky necessarily had to work very hard when picking a winner of the conference. How many times in the past 15 years have you thought “you know what? I don’t think the Griz have it this year” when thinking about the upcoming season?

Even in what was considered a down season, a 7-4 record that caused them to miss the playoffs, the Montana Grizzlies were still in the thick of things last year. However, Eastern Washington and Montana State stole the thunder.

And that’s just fine. The latest Sports Network preseason poll has EWU ranked
No. 1 in the country. While Eagle fans like myself are tap dancing on our lifesize mannequins of Taiwan Jones, we know what this means: every team in the nation will be gunning for the Eagles.

They’re not going to get an easy game the entire year. And they open up with the
University of Washington, who should have no problem getting pumped to play the defending FCS national champion and No. 1 team ranked in the country. I am now shuddering at the FBS shellacking the Huskies might put on the Eags.

Ask the teams in the FBS that were ranked No. 1 last season how things turned out and they probably would have been more inclined to stay under the radar until the national championship game… which is impossible without a playoff system. The FCS does have a playoff system, but EWU getting the No. 1 spot in the preseason is like painting a big red bull’s eye on their back.

(Good thing it will blend well with the red turf).

Meanwhile, the Montana State Bobcats were ranked at a lofty No. 6. While not quite up to the Eagles level, they now have some pressure heaped on them since they were ranked above the Grizzlies, who come in at No. 12.

Other than the 1984 national championship team, when has the words “clutch” and “always come up in a big spot” come to describe the Bobcats? Lets face it, all the pressure in the state will be on Montana State when they play Montana this year.

The Grizzlies are respected but they won’t be under the pressure that Eastern Washington and Montana State are under. That’s the same unfair preseason pressure that tends to break down good squads.

Eastern Washington couldn’t get on the front page of their local daily newspaper
while the FBS Washington State Cougars controlled the market and got more attention despite being more hapless than a dog without a sense of smell.

Now? The buzz is building around the program.

How will they handle that?

Montana’s been there before, and while they may be in the weird spot as preseason underdogs, something tells me that the Big Sky championship goes through Missoula this year.

Fall Sports Practice Report: Polson Soccer

Last season, defense helped the Polson boys' soccer team streak to the conference championship. This year, it's something they're already focusing in on just three days into two-a-day practices.

"We as a defense need to tell the offense what to do," Polson head coach Jess Kittle explained during a drill on Wednesday afternoon.

Breaking down his team into 3-on-2 situations and working on passing lanes, the Pirates will hope to replicate their anaconda-esque approach when it comes to choking other teams' offenses.

"On defensive days like this, I want to keep the pressure on the boys so they'll keep the pressure on the other teams," Kittle said. "That way we can start with fundamentals and build into a team concept."

Polson has a mix of returning starters and young players that will be looking to step up, but right now their just finding their legs thanks to the ultra-intense "County Fair" conditioning workouts in the mornings.

And Wednesday just so happens to be the day that players hit a wall.

"Generally it's the third day that guys find the toughest," Kittle said. "Although after one full revolution in the fair today (meaning everyone has done every drill in the county fair), the team went on a one mile run and they rocked it. It was impressive."

Historically, Polson has started slow in the season but have picked things up once the season gets into gear.

"Last year we dropped our first three games then we stepped on it and went undefeated in conference," Kittle said.

The Pirates will have a tough first-game opponent with Hamilton on Aug. 30, a team that went undefeated in the regular season last year, but have an 11-day gap before they play another varsity match-up (Park at home on Sept. 10). Kittle said he expects plenty of improvement between the first and second games.

Polson will certain be in the cross-hairs this season after winning the conference championship last season. The bulls eye doesn't deter the Pirates though, they'll be gunning for more hardware at the end of the season.

"We know it and we're aiming for it again," Kittle said. "We want to be the two-time conference champions this season."
