Glacier downs Pirates

Glacier pitcher Jessie Compton had six strikeouts and five putouts and the Wolfpack defense was solid behind her as Western AA Glacier defeated visiting Polson 5-1 on Tuesday at Kidsports Complex.

"The way (Compton) played her position defensively was awesome. She was good. She had a heckuva game. She was very solid for us today. It was awesome to see," said Glacier coach Joel Bemis.

"(The Pirates) are a very good team and they can really roll. We played solid defense, we didn't have too many errors and the errors we did have didn't hurt us," he said. "To be able to play one of the best and be able to compete and win ... this was a good game for us.

"And we hit the ball," he said.

Glacier outhit the Pirates 13-6 on the day and had three doubles and a home run. Polson had no extra-base hits.

Polson got going first, however, with a run in the first inning. It also had the bases loaded with just one out in the first.

"Jessie was able to work out of it," the coach said.

She got a strikeout for the second out and got the third to pop out to short.

"The girls just settled down. We kind of got right into the game. It was a very solid team effort," Bemis said. "They didn't get many baserunners after the first inning. It speaks to the efforts of Jessie and to the team defense."

Baylee Quay's third inning two-run home run over the left field fence gave the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead.

Quay wound up 3-for-3 on the day with two RBI. Anna Costa was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Megan Connolly was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

For Polson, Sallie Sams was 2-for-3 and Ashley Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Wolfpack (7-9, 5-6) travels to Libby on Tuesday.
