The Columbia Falls Invite recap by Bob Gunderson

Here is Polson head track coach Bob Gunderson's take on this weekend at the Columbia Falls Invitational. He does a good job breaking down everything and highlighting top performers. He always writes a whole lot better than that guy that puts together the Lake County Leader sports section.

Hopefully, we'll have this every week for you all to get a good understanding of how the track meets went.

GIRLS
First of all, I am glad we are through our spring break. It always disrupts our conditioning and once again there were key kids that were missing. Some may still not be back in time for the meet on Tuesday at 1:00PM in Kalispell. On the varsity girls side, we were missing the Starkey sisters and Anna DiGiallonardo.

On the plus side, Sierra Pete was able to compete for the first time since blowing our her ACL in the 2010 divisional girls basketball tournament. She tore the reconstructed ACL again last August. It is a miracle that she can do what she is doing after undergoing these two surgeries. Her 1:06 in the 400m was an extremely good mark considering her circumstances.

Breanne Kelley competed in her first meet of the spring and had very good times in both hurdle races as well as a 1:04 split on the 1600m relay. She also tried the high jump for the first time finishing 6th due to earlier misses with a jump of 4-10. We plan to continue with her in this event as she has the potential to end up in the 5'-2" to 5'-4" range.

Claudia Hewston has been impressive with her efforts this spring in the 800m and 1600m runs. She also ran a good leg on the 1600m relay on Saturday.

Overall we need to put a little more emphasis on conditioning in practice. We have been trying to avoid over-use injuries and have brought the kids along a little slower this spring. We are going to have to "train through" a couple of meets to get them where thy need to be.

BOYS
Vince DiGiallonardo also missed the whole break and is still not fully recovered from an ankle sprain he incurred in basketball way back in January. He is one of our fastest kids and best jumpers. We hope that he can begin competing in the sprints and short relay team this coming week.

Mike Devlin scratch all four of his long jump attempts. He was over 20 feet on some near misses.

The Pole Vault crew (Zion Lee, Brock Bleazard, Drew Fouty, and Jesse Alfiero) came through with some good efforts and several P.R.'s. Zion and Brock were very close at 12'6" as they finished 2nd and 3rd in that event.

Zion ran the 110 hurdles for the first time in a meet. He 3-stepped all of them and finished in 6th. He has some pretty good potential in this event as well as in the 300 hurdles.

Our 1600m relay team ran much better than two weeks ago in Corvallis and had a good early season time of 3:41.

Our weight crew of Clark Rubel, Dale Big Sam, and Riley Sampson garnered some important points in their events. They are consistent to this point with their marks in the shotput and discus are one of the strengths of our team within the northwest division.

Chris Cote has been working hard and his time of 54.93 was a PR in the open 400m. I would really like to see him try the 800m. Not only would he be good in that event but it would help his open 400.

As with the girls, we need to put a little more emphasis on conditioning and will have to "train through" some meets if we want to get to where we want to be in May.
