Pirates buck Broncs

On a cold, wet homecoming night, Will Davey and Vince DiGiallonardo were on fire under center, leading the Polson Pirates to a 42-6 romp over the visiting Frenchtown Broncs.

Davey rushed for three touchdowns while DiGiallonardo added two on the ground and one through the air as the Pirates improved to 6-0 on the season.

Polson raced out to a quick 7-0 lead, driving down the field in convincing fashion, capped off by Davey's first TD of the night from 2 yards out just four minutes into the game.

The Pirates wouldn't score again until 2:25 remained in the first half. This time, Davey found paydirt from 9 yards away, giving Polson a two-score lead.

Just over two minutes later, DiGiallonardo led a furious march down the field with time ticking down. His 12-yard run with 15 seconds left in the second quarter gave the Pirates a 21-0 lead late.

The Broncs had an answer, however, taking the ensuing kickoff 84 yards to get on the board just before halftime, cutting Polson's lead to 21-6.

That was as close as Frenchtown would get, as the Pirates dominated the third quarter, scoring on DiGiallonardo's 1-yard plunge, his 19-yard strike to Justin Hoel and Davey's 1-yard run to put Polson ahead 42-6.

The Pirates face a stiff test at home next Friday when the Libby Loggers visit in their last regular-season home game of the season.

GAME NOTES FROM THE BLOGGER

- Nice to see the Polson defense, you know, do what they do. Frenchtown couldn't get anything going offensively and the guys played a very disciplined game (only three penalties between the teams). It's the fifth time in six games the defense hasn't been scored upon and it was a great way for them to rebound from last week's contest against Whitefish.

- Polson's offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage against the Broncs. True to form, the Pirates once again got big games from Davey, DiGiallonardo and Paul McClurg, but the line was responsible for a lot of that. Just another stellar effort from them.

- Watching DiGiallonardo run is tough. Literally. Maybe it's because I'm a novice cameraman, but I tried to follow him when he ran into a big pile of players around the 10 yard line in the third quarter. After a few seconds, I put my camera down, giving up the search. Out of the corner of my left eye, I found him. Already celebrating in the end zone. No idea how he ended up there ... he even has a cast on his left arm, which should make it easier. Nope.

- Special shout-out to Eric Williamson. On defense, he was everywhere. He batted down one pass, which coaches argued was a lateral and would have been an easy six. He was in on numerous tackles. He seemed to find the ball or ball-carrier wherever he went. Great game, Eric!

- Finally, congratulations to Homecoming King Josiah Clairmont (and Queen Ashley Johnson). It's gotta be a blast being able to be honored among your peers with that type of distinction and both looked like deserving royalty!
