Polson boys finish regular season with win over Libby

(Written by John Heglie)

At Polson, the host Pirates were able to convert an early scoring opportunity from Riley Lemm off an assist from James Larson that would be all the lead they would need as they downed Libby 3-0 on Saturday.

Libby would get several opportunities to take a crack at the Polson goal, but Pirate keeper Clay Frissell vacuumed up any flying particles of a round soccer ball shape that approached his goal space. Polson would get two more scores in the third quarter of the second half.

Freshman Jonah Kasnitz netted his first varsity goal of his young career. Three minutes later senior midfielder Jonathan Murphy gave Polson its third score of the night off a ball that bore the signature of James Larson on it even if he doesn’t get credited for an official assist.

One of the strongest scoring opportunites for Libby came from the foot of Talus Martin off a penalty kick in the 71st minute, but Polson keeper Frissell was able to deny the shot with great positioning and solid hand work.

Polson senior Everardo Guerrero, who has missed much of the season due to injury, came oh-so-close to netting a goal in the second half, just being denied by mere inches. Senior midfielder/striker Lemm absorbed a high velocity shot to the face in the final quarter of the second half, the sting of which likely resembled that of tangling with a hornets nest, but was able to shake it off with the aid of the balm of victory.
